Into the Twister of Terror

1

"Twister!" you scream. Your heart races.
You stare up. The sky above you is thick with black clouds. A fierce wind
whistles through the trees around the farmhouse. Far off on the horizon, a
swirling dark funnel reaches from the ground up to the sky.
"Aunt Emily! Uncle Jed!" you shout. You run into the house. The screen door
slams behind you.
You have to get your aunt and uncle to the safety of the storm cellar fast! you
realize.
Since you were a baby, your aunt and uncle have raised you. Your parents died
when you were very young. You love growing up on your aunt and uncle's Oklahoma
farm. And you can't let anything happen to them!
"Aunt Emily! Uncle Jed!" you cry. "Where are you?"

Hurry to PAGE 2.

2

"Here we are! What's all the fuss about?"
Your aunt walks in from the hallway, wiping her hands on her apron. Your uncle
follows her. They both smile at you.
"The twister..." you begin.
"Well, come on, then," Uncle Jed says. "We'd better get underground."
You take Aunt Emily's arm and follow Uncle Jed back into the yard. The wind is
really howling now! The branches on the giant oak tree out back whip back and
forth. You begin to tremble in fear.
Your uncle holds open the storm cellar door. Aunt Emily steps toward him,
pulling you along. Then, with a shock, you remember something. You twist your
arm free.
"Come on, honey!" your aunt shouts. "We have to get in the cellar!"
"No!" you scream. "I can't!"

Why not? Turn to PAGE 3.

3

"I can't!" you shout back. "Not without Yoyo!"
Yoyo - your trusty little black dog. Where is he? He usually follows you
everywhere.
You turn to go find him, but dust clogs the air. You can barely see! The wind
tugs at your clothes. It's hard even to stay on your feet.
Uncle Jed's strong hand lands on your shoulder.
"Come on, now," he cries in your ear. "There's no time!"
But over the fierce howling of the wind, you think you hear a faint noise. Is
it...?
It is!
It's Yoyo's bark!

If you go after Yoyo, go to PAGE 16.

If you run into the storm cellar, go to PAGE 101.

"Can you hear me?"
A voice stirs you from a deep sleep. Slowly you open your eyes. You look up into
the kind face of a doctor. He's surrounded by an ambulance crew and police
officers.
"Wh-what happened?" you stammer.
"Why, you saved Tully's Creek!" the doctor answers.
"We heard the whole thing on our radios," a state trooper next to him tells you.
"Including the way you tricked those two crazy scientists into ruining their
plan!"
"Spin and Sally. Where are they?" you ask.
"No sign of them," the policeman answers. "You were lucky. You landed in some
bushes over there."
"You saved an entire town!" the doctor cheers. "You're a hero."
The next day you take part in a parade in your honor down Tully's Creek's Main
Street. Every townsperson turns out for the festivities. So no one is home to
hear the weather report.
The report predicting another twister in the middle of town. Looks like a hero's
work is never done. That's why you have to...

START ALL OVER AGAIN ON PAGE 1.

5

The fierce command halts the wind. Dust settles and you flop down on the cave
floor.
What is going on here? you wonder. Who is talking now? A noise disturbs your
thoughts. You notice Wendy stirring. She sits up and rubs the side of her head.
"What's happening?" Wendy croaks.
"I don't know," you whisper. "Something stopped the storm from smashing us.
Let's cut out of here while we can."
"No way!" Wendy says. "We came to give back the doll."
You gaze at the doll in your hand. "Well, what's the deal? We're in the cave,
what do we have to do now?"
"Beats me," Wendy replies. "I'm positive this is the right cave, but..." She
touches the bump on her scalp. "I feel confused from getting conked. I'm sure
there's something else we should do. I just can't remember what."
You still think it's time to leave the doll and run, but Wendy has been right
about this stuff before.
Then again, her memory is a little messed up right now. What should you do?

Stay? Go to PAGE 23.

Run? Go to PAGE 126.

Well, duh! Of course you accept! You're going to be a STAR!
The next few days fly by. Before you know it, Sealburg puts you on a plane to
Los Angeles . You stay at the fanciest hotel. And eat the fanciest meals. Your
face is on every magazine cover. You're hot! And you haven't even made a movie
yet! Everything is beyond your wildest dreams.
Finally the big day comes. You head to the set to shoot your first movie. It's
called Cyclone.
"Stand right over there," Sealburg orders. He points to a spot in front of the
camera. You stride to the spot and glance behind you. Yikes! About a foot away
is a pit filled with sharp, jagged metal.
"That stuff is fake, right?" you ask.
"No, it's real," the director answers with a frown. "We need everything to look
as convincing as possible. Now, when we turn on the wind machine, just act
scared."
Sounds easy, you think.
"Ready?" Sealburg cries. "ACTION!"

Be a star on PAGE 110.

7

"I'm the reason the twister's here," Wendy repeats. "It's after me!"
"That's nuts!" you shout back. "It's just a storm!"
But Wendy is silent. She just stares at the shaking door, her eyes wide. Whoa!
She really believes the twister is chasing her, you realize.
WHOOSH! The building shudders as the wind slams into it. "Relax," you advise
Wendy. "Everything will be okay"
Wendy looks panicked. "I have to get out of here!"
Before you can move, she jumps for the door.
"And if you're smart, you'll leave too!" she shouts. You glance at the cracks
spreading down the brick walls. She's right, you realize. Somehow, the
storehouse doesn't seem as sturdy as it did a moment ago. But what chance do the
two of you have of surviving out in the open?
You have to do something. But what?

Stay in the storehouse? Turn to PAGE 80.

Run with Wendy? Go to PAGE 129.

"Alive?" you repeat.
"Yes," Spin insists. "If the tornado did sweep them up, as you say it did, it's
possible they're in a previously undiscovered zone we found inside the tornado.
It's safe there. But you're trapped in the storm. With no way to get out."
"Until now," Sally adds. "We've found a way to get inside that safe zone. In
fact, we were about to test it out. If you help us, there's a chance we might
find your aunt and uncle in the twister."
You stare at the two scientists. Your head is whirling with happiness. Maybe you
can save your aunt and uncle!
But, then again, you just met Spin and Sally. How do you know you can trust
them?
I mean, a survival zone inside a tornado? How do you know they're not making it
up?
"If we're going to try, we have to act fast," Sally tells you. "While the
twister is still active!"

If you agree to help with the experiment,
go to PAGE 40.

If you don't agree, go to PAGE 99.

Wendy points into the depths of the cave. "Back there!" she shouts. The wind
almost swallows her words.
Together the two of you struggle toward the rear of the tunnel. Hunched over,
you fight for every step against the pull of the wind. At any moment the mighty
twister could lift you up, draw you out of the cave, and into the sky!
"I can't make it!" Wendy moans.
You swallow. You're not sure if you can make it, either. You glance ahead. In
the gloom of the dark cavern, you see a length of old rope coiled on the ground.
Hey! You could tie yourselves to one of the large boulders in the cave, then
wait out the storm.
But what if this tornado is so strong, it snaps the rope? Maybe you should just
keep forging ahead instead!

If you tie yourselves to a boulder, turn to PAGE 91.

If you continue moving to the back of the cave,
turn to PAGE 113.

10

There's a flash of blue light. When your eyes clear, you see that you, Wendy,
and the genie are sitting in a small, round room. The walls are covered with
striped silk.
"Awesome!" you shout. "You saved us! Now take me to my aunt and uncle."
"Sorry, no can do," the genie replies.
"But, my wish is your command," you protest.
"Only if you're on the carpet," he sneers.
You and Wendy search frantically. No carpet.
"You didn't say to bring the carpet someplace safe - only the two of you," the
genie tells you. "Now I don't have to listen to you."
"But... where are we?" Wendy demands.
"Someplace safe," the genie replies. "We're in my bottle. And we'll stay here
until someone else talks to that carpet. It should only take two hundred years."
"Oh, no!" Wendy moans. "You got us trapped in this bottle!"
She's right, you realize. You're so mad at yourself, you want to burst. Too bad.
It looks like you're going to have to keep your anger all bottled up for now.

THE END

11

You gaze at your aunt and uncle. They're alive. They're unharmed. And they're
even smiling!
You guess they should be smiling - you're all getting a new house out of this.
You stare at Neederlander. He seems like a nice enough guy -and that Twister
Pack does have you curious....
"Okay," you decide. "I'll play. But only if I get to be 'it.' "
Neederlander agrees. He instructs you on how to use the backpack, and you blast
off.
Woo-hoo! Being a tornado is fun! Looks like you, Peter, Neederlander, and Wendy
are going to have lots of fun "doing the twist" from now on.

THE END

12

You struggle against the cords that bind you, but it's no use. Your arms and
waist are tied too tightly to the chair.
Wait a minute, you realize. Your feet! Spin forgot to tie your feet! The
scientist is concentrating on his side of the control panel. He's totally
focused on his evil task. You only have a few seconds.
You stretch your feet out in front of you. Yes! You can reach the controls on
your side of the panel! By your right foot you spot a control marked STORM SUIT.
If you hit that, maybe it will stop the suit. But you can't be sure.
By your left foot is the button that turns on the intercom Spin uses to talk to
Sally. Hmmm. What if you hit that?

If you hit the suit control, go to PAGE 35.

If you turn on the intercom, go to PAGE 125.

13

Sam and Ethel know something. You're sure of it. And you have an idea. The
trailer dives, sending the couch sliding past you. You grab the remote control
from Sam.
"Hey, give that back!" Sam howls.
In one breath you blurt out,
"We're-caught-in-a-twister-and-we're-all-going-to-be-killed-unless-we-get-out-of-here!"
As if to make your point cleared the trailer takes another sickening dive before
swooping up again.
"In a twister? Why didn't you say so?" Ethel remarks. "Honey, where'd you put
that airplane conversion kit?"
Sam gets up from the couch and walks to the back of the trailer. "It's in here
somewhere, I think."
"Airplane conversion kit?" you repeat, stunned.
"Advertised on TV" Ethel nods. "A real bargain."
"I knew it would come in handy one day," Sam grunts. He pulls a large carton out
of a storage closet.
The trailer takes a stomach-twisting dive. "Whatever you're doing," you plead,
"could you please hurry?"
"Sure," Sam answers. "Did anyone see my tool kit?"
Aaugh!

Look for it on PAGE 18.

14

"We didn't mean to take the doll. W-we made a mistake," you stammer. "I'm
sorry."
"A mistake?" The spirit bellows. He glares at you for a moment. Then, to your
great relief, he nods in agreement.
"Well," he tells you, "anyone can make a mistake."
"They can?" you blurt out. "I mean, they can!" you add.
"Since it was just a mistake," the spirit continues, "you may leave. In fact, I
will help you get home."
"Gee, thanks," you reply. You and Wendy nod happily.
The spirit lifts his hand, and a gust of wind blows through the cave. Magically
you feel yourself lifted up and carried outside. You and Wendy are flying over
the countryside. You're really going home!

Fly to PAGE 120.

15

You have to return the doll yourself. There's no time to lose! You grab the wind
doll from Wendy's pocket and run farther into the cave.
After just a few steps it becomes pitch-black. You have to feel your way forward
with outstretched hands.
"Whoa!" you cry. The floor gives way beneath you!
You drop to the ground with a thud. Then you hear something that makes your
blood run cold.
A rattle.
Something cold and smooth glides over your leg. You have to bite your lip to
keep from screaming. You hear another rattle - then another.
You realize the horrible truth. Somehow you've landed in a nest of snakes!
You feel fangs sink into your leg with a sharp, stabbing pain. Instantly your
leg goes numb.
"No!" you wail. "No-o-o-o-o!"
The deadly coldness starts to spread up your leg and through your body.
Face it. You're doomed. You've been killed by a snake. And that really bites!

THE END

16

"I can't leave Yoyo!" you scream. You break free from your uncle and stumble
toward the sound of Yoyo's bark. Your muscles strain. You fight the wind for
every step.
A blizzard of yellow dust clogs your eyes. You can't see a thing!
Your heart sinks. You'll never find Yoyo. You turn to head back to the storm
cellar, to your aunt and uncle - and gasp. You can't see them or the cellar
anymore. You're doomed!
"Aieee!" you shriek. Something rubbed against your leg. You look down to see
what it is, but you can't tell. There's too much dust. You reach down - and
touch Yoyo's soft, woolly coat.
"Yoyo!" you cry. He barks as if he's answering you.
"Get us out of here, boy!" you say into his ear. "Find the storm cellar!"
You grab hold of Yoyo's collar. He pulls you forward. The two of you push ahead
into the rising wind. You hope Yoyo knows where he's going. Otherwise, you're
both doomed!

Follow Yoyo to PAGE 82.

17

Yes, you decide. You'll get Spin out of the truck - somehow. You glance at
him... and notice something. His chair is on wheels - and it's near the end of
the truck!
Near the wide-open back door! All you have to do is...
You run at the chair. "Ooof!" You throw your weight against it. It rolls across
the floor of the truck and out the back - with Spin still on it!
"Hey!" he shouts. He thuds onto the dirt below.
You slam the doors closed and bolt them from the inside. Whew! You're safe.
"Spin? Spin, what's going on?" Sally's voice sounds frantic over the intercom.
You race to the controls.
"Spin isn't here," you say into the microphone. "And your plans for blackmail
are through!"
"You saw the tape?" Sally asks, her voice tense.
"That's right!" you cry. "Now I'm reeling you in!"
Your hand reaches for the button marked CABLE CONTROL. You press it.
"No!" Sally cries. "Don't bring me in! I - I found your aunt and uncle!"

Turn to PAGE 104.

18

You and Wendy find the tool kit, then watch in amazement as Sam unpacks a bunch
of steel parts. He sticks inflatable wings through slots in the sides and rear
of the trailer. "Now, the propeller... the propeller," he mutters. "Ah, here it
is."
The trailer begins to spin out of control. "Hurry!" Wendy urges him.
Sam steps into the driver's seat and presses a button. You hear the buzz of a
small engine.
Ethel walks through the trailer. "Please return to your seats, the captain has
turned on the 'fasten seat belt' sign," she requests.
Wow! Sam did it! He turned the trailer into a plane!
"Careful," Ethel warns you. "We may experience some turbulence."
The trailer begins to shake violently. You glance at two empty seats. You and
Wendy sit and strap yourselves in. From the driver's seat Sam yells back, "Hold
on!"
The flying trailer starts to bounce and roll. You grip the sides of the chair so
tightly, your knuckles turn white.
Will Sam be able to fly out of this?

Bump on over to PAGE 118.

19

Of course you'll go into the storm yourself. It may be the only way you'll see
your aunt and uncle alive again!
You clear your throat to keep your voice from cracking. You turn to Sally and
declare, "I'll do it!"
An hour later you're standing in the middle of a field. Sally bolts the helmet
of the storm suit onto your head.
You glance over her shoulder. The huge black twister is racing across the
countryside, aimed right at you!
"Good luck," Sally calls. She hops in the van with Spin. The two of them drive
off. Soon they're nothing but a black dot far in the distance.
Sally's voice sounds over the transmitter in your ear. "Just relax and let the
suit do the work," she urges.
Yeah, sure. Relax, you think. No problem.
Every muscle in your body is tense. The tornado's winds whip violently around
you.
"Five, four, three, two, one." Sally's voice counts down. "Release!"

Take off to PAGE 72.

20

You pull yourself up the green rope, above the twister!
At the top of the rope, you poke your head through a fleecy cloud - and gasp. In
the distance stands a huge castle.
And in front of the castle is - a giant!
No, it can't be, you think. Giants only exist in fairy tales, right? Wrong. The
giant lumbers over to you.
You try to slide down the rope. Too late! The giant plucks you off the vine and
peers at you with his huge bloodshot eyes.
"Where's my goose?" he roars, setting you down. "Where's my harp? I'll break
your bones to bake my bread!"
Now that sounds familiar. You've seen this giant before - in a fairy tale, the
one with the bean stalk. Only now, somehow, he's totally real!
You're so scared, you babble the first thing that comes into your mind: "Uh,
fee-fie-fo-fum?"
The giant frowns. "What's that supposed to mean? I hate people who make no
sense." He brings his foot down - right on top of you! SQUASH!
Too bad! Looks like your choice of last words was fee-fie-fo-DUMB!

THE END

21

"Fine." You take the doll from Wendy. "I'll do it." When you think about the
angry wind spirit, your hands tremble a little. What will the spirit do to you?
you wonder. But you steel yourself and place the doll on the rock shelf.
The doll begins to shine with a yellow glow. You gasp and take a step back.
"Check it out!" you cry to Wendy. But when you turn, she's gone. In her place is
a ghostlike woman in Native American clothing. Somehow you know she's the wind
spirit!
"Don't be scared of me," a familiar voice requests.
"Wendy?" you respond.
"Yes, it's me," she answers with a gentle smile.
"B-but - how..." you stammer.
"The doll was stolen," she explains. "And I lost control of the winds. I found
the doll again, but only a mortal could return it. Thank you. Now I can repay
you."
"Repay me?" you wonder.
She laughs. A breeze blows through the cavern. You're lifted off your feet and
into the air.
"No!" you cry out in fear. "Stop!"

Turn to PAGE 85.

22

Forget it, you think. I'm not going to let him get away with this.
"I won't let you destroy that town!" you shout to Spin.
Spin stares at you in shock. Then he lunges at you. You duck under his arm, but
he comes after you again. You rush to the other side of the bank of monitors.
Spin is right behind you.
The truck isn't that big. You know it's only a matter of time before he catches
you!
"Spin?" Sally's voice breaks in over the radio intercom. "Spin! What's
happening? I have control of the storm, but I need your data now!"
Spin stops. He glares at you. "You'll ruin everything!" he snaps. Then he sits
in front of the control panel and starts punching buttons.
This is your big chance. But what should you do? Hit a few buttons and see what
happens? Or maybe you could try to get Spin out of the truck. One thing's for
sure. You have to decide on something - quick! Or Tally's Creek is done for!

If you try for the controls, go to PAGE 86.

If you try to get Spin out of the truck,
go to PAGE 17.

23

You have to stay in the cave until you figure out what to do, you decide.
"You have to remember, Wendy," you insist. "Or we're up against a wall here."
"Did you say wall?" Wendy asks.
You shrug. "Yeah. So what?"
"So now I remember what to do - thanks to you!" Wendy takes the doll from you
and places it in a small hollow in the cave wall. It fits inside perfectly.
"Here's your doll back," Wendy shouts. "Sorry. My fault."
You jump in surprise as a ghostly being pops into view. He's dressed in
traditional Native American garb. The spirit is almost transparent. But you can
still tell he's angry.
"The wind spirit," Wendy whispers.
The figure looms over you. No! What's he going to do?
The spirit's frown melts into a smile. "You have done well," he declares. "I
will give you a reward."
Wow! A reward! You've never felt so relieved.
The spirit raises his hand, and the wind blowing through the cave lifts you and
Wendy!

Fly to PAGE 105.

24

You trust your dog. Besides, maybe Yoyo has some kind of canine instinct that
helps him find a safe place from the twister.
You stumble toward the broken-down house. You have to crawl through the slanting
doorway. It's dark inside. You can't see much. But right away you hear someone
else.
"How many are we?" asks a deep voice.
"There's a herd of us," someone answers in a high, twittering tone.
"We'll be safe here," the deep voice replies. Many others agree in a low murmur.
Your tired body feels a flood of relief. Other people! These folks must know
what they're doing. And obviously they think this house is safe!
Your eyes slowly get used to the gloom. Who's there? You peer around a corner -
and gasp in shock at what you see. Those voices don't belong to people. The room
beyond is filled with animals! And they're all talking!

Find out more on PAGE 52.

25

You're sure they want you to stop! There must be something in front of you.
Something you can't see - like a ditch or a fence. You slam on the brake. Hard.
Unfortunately, since you've never driven a car before, you slam on the brake too
hard. Which sends you flying toward the windshield.
And, oops! In all the confusion you forgot to buckle your seat belt. A major
no-no.
In a second you're through the windshield and flying right into the oncoming
tornado.
You should never have thought you could drive.
Oh, well. Those are the brakes!

THE END

26

You can't try to save those people. It's too risky. You make a mad dash for the
shelter of the brick storehouse.
The wind grows stronger. It slams against your chest - knocking the air out of
you.
I'll never make it! you think. But fear drives you forward. Your hand closes
around the handle of the storehouse door. You pull with all your might.
WHAM! The door flies open as the wind catches it. You feel yourself being lifted
off your feet.
"NO!" you scream. From inside the storehouse a slender hand reaches out, grabs
you, and pulls you inside.
"Whew," you say. "Thanks. That was close!" You look up to see who helped you.
It's a girl just about your age. Her long brown hair is tangled around her dirty
face.
"Come on!" she shouts. "Help me close the door!"
Together you pull the heavy wooden door shut. You collapse against a wall,
breathing heavily.
"Who are you?" you gasp.
"I'm Wendy," she shouts above the roaring wind. "And I'm the reason the twister
is here!"

Huh? Go to PAGE 7.

27

With a thundering blast the mountain blows its stack. Ash and cinders shoot high
into the air. Oh, no! you realize. You're standing at the base of a volcano!
The ground shakes and rumbles. You want to run, but you're stuck to your place
in fear.
The earth splits open beside you. A jet of red-hot molten lava explodes into the
air. It gushes out of the ground and flows toward you. No way can you outrun it.
Oh, well. Looks like you're out of the frying pan... but into the fire!

THE END

28

You can't believe it! The whole disaster is a fake! The man and woman you tried
to save are actors! In some stupid tornado movie!
You glance around at all the camera equipment and gasp in surprise. Standing
next to a huge wind machine are Uncle Jed and Aunt Emily! They're alive! You jog
over to them.
Your aunt puts her arm across your shoulder. "Did we forget to tell you the
movie crew was coming today?"
"B-b-but the twister..." you stammer. "You acted scared."
"Just practicing our parts," your uncle declares.
"Parts?" you exclaim. "I thought you were both dead!"
Before your aunt and uncle can explain, a tall, bearded man wearing a baseball
cap strides up to you.
"Meet Mr. Sealburg, our director," your aunt exclaims.
"Kid, you were super!" he cries. "Loved the way you acted scared. I'm going to
make you a major star!"
What? You're no actor. How can you be in the movies?
"I have to know right now!" the world's greatest director states. "Are you in my
movie or not?"

If you accept the part, go to PAGE 6.

If you don't accept the part, go to PAGE 124.

29

"Sally, you have to believe me," Spin pleads. But there's no answer.
A loud whooshing sound from outside the truck brings a look of fear to his face.
He stares at the radar screen. His mouth drops open in shock.
You can see what has him so upset. The tornado is no longer headed toward
Tully's Creek. Instead, it's coming straight at the truck - and you! Sally must
have gained total control over the storm with her suit. Now she's mad at Spin,
and she's coming to get him!
The truck begins to shake from the increasing winds. The walls bang and rattle.
BOOM!
The truck is lifted off the ground. It tilts backwards.
You slam into the back door, nearly breaking your arm.
"Aaaah!" you scream. The door bangs open. You're falling... falling to the
ground. You look up and spot the truck being lifted into the sky, with Spin
still inside.

You stop yourself at the last moment. These animals sound as if they hate
humans. They're not going to be too happy that you overheard their secrets. But
Yoyo must have known they were in here. Why did he lead you to this house?
And, hey, what happened to Yoyo, anyway?
Quietly you step outside the farmhouse. The storm has passed and the sky is
beginning to clear.
There is your dog, Yoyo, sitting by the doorway. You're no longer freaked out
when he talks to you. But you are amazed. You stand there with your mouth
hanging open.
"Now you know," he says in a low voice.
"Yes." You nod. "I know. Why didn't you ever talk to me before?"
"We can't talk all the time," he explains as he licks his paws. "But something
happens to us when a big storm is coming or when an earthquake is about to hit.
We gain special powers. And we can talk."
You shake your head. This is so totally weird.
"I'm glad you told me," you say, kneeling down.
"There's something else I wanted to tell you," the dog continues. "Your aunt and
uncle are in trouble!"

You have to find out who this boy is - and what he and Wendy are talking about,
you decide. Besides, who knows where that rope goes.
"What do you mean, 'play'?" you shout to the boy over the sound of the storm.
"Hold on!" the boy shouts. "I can't hear you!"
No kidding, you think. We're in the middle of a tornado!
"Hey!" the boy yells. "Time-out! Stop blowing ! I can't hear him!"
Time-out? What does he think he's doing? you wonder. Does he really think the
storm will listen to him?

You know that bus isn't sturdy enough to stop all the animals! Especially the
bear and the horse!
You sprint like crazy to the school building.
Behind you, a dog snaps at your legs. Your heart thuds in your chest. Your
breath comes in painful gasps.
You try the school door - it's open! You dive inside and lock it.
Pounding sounds from the outside. It's just a matter of time, you realize,
before the animals break inside. You moan softly, wondering what to do next.
Still gasping for breath, you run blindly down the school hallway. You search
for something, anything, that will help you.
You throw open one door after another. All you find are empty classrooms. Soon
you reach the last door on the hall. Frantically you throw it open.
And gasp at what you see.
The room is filled with animals!

You press PLAN B.
KA-BAM! With a deafening explosion the rocket takes off! You're thrown back into
your seat. Pressure builds and builds in your head. It feels as if it's going to
explode! Then you pass out.
When you wake up, one look out the window tells you things have gone from bad to
worse. Bright stars blaze against a black sky. You're in outer space!

WHAM!
The trailer hits the ground. The force smashes it - and everyone in it - to the
size of a pancake.
Oh, well. Looks like you've totally fallen flat in this adventure.

35

You stretch your feet toward the storm-suit control button. Just one more inch
and...
You gasp! No! You slipped! Your foot hit some other button! What will that do?
You look up at the radar screen. The twister is still on course for the town,
but now it's moving even faster!

Turn to PAGE 65.

36

Sally rushes toward the twister. You shudder. How can she risk her life in that
terrible wind?
Spin taps your shoulder. "Let's get to the controls."
In the back of the truck, you sit in front of a bank of video monitors. You can
see a long cable stretching from the truck to Sally's metal suit. It sends you
data about her, and it allows you to control parts of the suit.
Totally cool. As you watch, two small jets shoot out of the pack on Sally's
back, sending her straight up into the dark clouds.
"Wow!" you exclaim.
"She's up!" Spin cries from the other side of the monitors. "Switch to Sally's
camera. Hit button A-1."
You reach out and press A-1. But instead of a view from Sally's camera, you see
a close-up of Spin, talking directly into the lens. Must be an old recording,
you reason. You start to turn it off, but then Spin says something strange.
"Attention, mayor of Tully's Creek. Our invention has given us control of the
tornado. Deliver one hundred million dollars to us by two P.M. or we will direct
the tornado to your town and kill you all!"

You won't leave your aunt and uncle, you decide.
You shake your fist in fury. "You can't scare us!" you shout into the wind.
"What do you mean us?" Yoyo barks. "I'm out of here!"
"Yoyo, wait!" you shout, but the little dog has already run off as fast as his
short legs can carry him.
The wind rises around you. It's already hard to stand upright. Maybe Yoyo had
the right idea.
"Yoyo!" you scream. "I'm coming!" You try to scramble off the pile of wreckage,
but the wind knocks you down. You fall onto a jagged piece of wood. Splinters
slice into your leg. Frantically you try to get to your feet, but you can't!
Rocks, branches, and dirt are being blown through the air. The funnel of
swirling black dust is almost on top of you. You can barely breathe.
Whoops!
Looks like you should have gone with your dog. Because now any hope you had of
saving your aunt and uncle is gone with the wind.

THE END

38

Oatbucket gallops faster than you've ever seen him gallop before. You glance
behind you. The dark funnel of the tornado is now just a smudge in the distance.
You're safe!
Oatbucket comes to a stop. The two of you slide off his back and collapse on the
ground.
"We can't hang out in one place for long," Wendy gasps. She peeks over her
shoulder.
Oh, no, you think. She can't still believe the twister is following her, can
she?
Wendy turns and points back in the direction you came. You take a look and gasp.
The twister - it's moving again! And it's coming straight for you!
"No way!" you shout, getting to your feet. The storm can't actually be following
Wendy, can it?
"It's this doll," she moans. She pulls a small doll out of her jacket pocket.
It's made of corn husks and beaded cloth.
"A doll?" you cry. "How can the twister be chasing you because of a doll?"
"If you give me a chance, I'll tell you," Wendy says.

Hear her story on PAGE 100.

39

There's no time to waste. You have to take a chance with this bridge.
"Come on, boy!" you order Yoyo. "I'll go first. If it holds my weight, it will
hold yours, no problem."
You try not to look at the muddy, swollen river as it rages under the bridge,
just inches from your feet. Slowly, carefully, you feel your way out onto the
span. It shudders and shakes from the water pounding at it. But then - you're
across! Safe on dry ground.
"You can make it, Yoyo!" you shout.
Yoyo runs lightly across the bridge. Yes! He did it!
He leads you up a large hill. As you reach the top, a deafening roar stops you
in your tracks. You turn toward it - and gasp! The entire bridge has been washed
out by a surge of water! Whew! Good thing you crossed it in time!
"Let's go," Yoyo insists. "Your aunt and uncle are close by"

Follow him to PAGE 63.

40

It's a big risk, trusting these two strangers, but you'll do anything to save
your aunt and uncle.
"Sure! I'll help you!" you declare.
"Great!" Spin replies. "Let's go to our lab."
While Spin drives, Sally explains the project. The two scientists have built a
"storm suit" - a one-person suit of armor, with jet packs on the back, attached
to electronic controls by a long cable. They plan to launch it into a twister -
with someone inside!
Whoever's in the suit should be able to explore the safety zone the scientists
have discovered. And, they think, the suit will enable a person to control the
storm!
Wow! you think. An invention like that could keep a tornado from destroying
towns and people!
"Maybe we'll find your aunt and uncle inside the tornado - and rescue them,"
Spin says. You smile at the thought.
"One of us would do it," Sally tells you. "But the suit is kind of small. We'd
have a better chance if someone your size were inside it."
You gulp. "Wait a minute. Do you mean...?"

Find out exactly what they mean on PAGE 61.

41

The wind gently lowers you and Wendy.
"I know this place!" you shout. "It's our farm! I'm home! The wind spirit blew
us back here as a reward!"
"This was a farm?" Wendy asks with doubt in her voice.
You glance around at the ruined house and barn. You remember your missing aunt
and uncle, and your joy vanishes.
"The lousy twister," you mutter.
"Hey! What's that?" Wendy points up into the sky.
Whoa! You can't believe your eyes. It's your aunt and uncle! They're flying
through the air too!
"This must be the wind spirit's reward!" you shout.
"Uncle Jed!" you call. You run to them after they land. "Aunt Emily! What
happened to you? Where were you?"
"I don't know," your uncle answers. "But I sure did like the in-flight movie!"
"That was the wind spirit," you start to explain, but your aunt interrupts to
give you a big hug.
"It doesn't matter," she says. "We're all together again."
"Yeah, Aunt Emily," you agree. "There's no place like home!"

THE END

42

Stop these crooks by yourself? No way! Puhlease! But if you call for help, maybe
the police can nab them.
There's a cellular phone on the table next to you. Holding your breath, you pick
it up.
Spin stays focused on his side of the control panel. Whew! You turn the phone
on.
A large hand clamps down on your shoulder.
Oh, no! You blew it!
"I told Sally we'd never get you to help us." It's Spin. He throws you up
against one of the walls of the truck. He ties your hands. The cords bite into
your wrists. Then he sits you down and binds you to a chair.
"Now," he gloats, "watch us do what no one has ever dreamed of. We will control
a tornado!"

Watch on PAGE 116.

"You're the what?" You thought you heard the voice say it was the storm. But,
that's impossible - right?
There's only one way to find out the truth, you realize - talk back. You turn
off your microphone. You don't want Sally and Spin to think you're crazy.
You clear your throat. "You're the storm?" you ask.
"Yes," the voice answers. The air in front of you goes from black to bright
blue. In the middle you see - a face! Its glowing eyes narrow at you
suspiciously: Its mouth scowls at you. And it speaks!
"I am the storm!" it declares. As it talks you can see rows of sharp teeth
sticking out of its mouth.
"What's going on up there?" Sally's voice demands from the speaker in your ear.
"Report!"
What can you say? If you tell her you're talking to the storm, she'll think
you're crazy and end the mission. But then, maybe that's not such a bad thing.
This storm doesn't look too friendly.

If you tell Sally about the storm, go to PAGE 51.

If you don't tell her, go to PAGE 62.

44

You have to stay. Aunt Emily and Uncle Jed may need your help - if they're still
alive.
No! You tell yourself. They are alive. They have to be!
The twister moves away. You stumble back toward the farmhouse. Your stomach
clenches as you head for the storm cellar. The door has been ripped off of it.
You peer inside.
Gone! Aunt Emily and Uncle Jed - both gone.
Your eyes fill with tears. Could the twister have picked them up and tossed them
away? If so, are they alive somewhere? How will you find them? What will you do
now?
A shift in the wind stops your thoughts. Whoa!
The twister is coming back! You have to get out of here!
You spy your uncle's brick storehouse on the other side of the hill. Yes! You
can hide there! You run so hard, the muscles in your legs burn, but there's no
time to stop. At the top of the hill, you glance back.
Oh, no! Two strangers are walking right into the twister's path! You have to
warn them! Then again, if you stop, you could be killed by the storm!

If you keep running for the storehouse,
go to PAGE 26.

If you warn the couple, go to PAGE 109.

45

"That store doesn't look like it can stand up to the twister anyway," you
declare. "Let's keep going."
You urge Oatbucket forward.
BOOM!
A bolt of lightning strikes a massive oak tree just yards away. The towering
tree splits in half and falls across the road. Oatbucket squeals and rears up on
his hind legs. You and Wendy flip to the ground.
"Oatbucket! No!" you shout. But he trots off.
"Come on," Wendy cries. "The cave isn't too far."
She heads for a group of hills in the distance. You start to follow. Until you
notice a trailer by the side of the road. A man is standing in the trailer's
door, waving frantically at you.
"That guy looks like he needs us," you tell Wendy.
"The only way we can help anyone is by stopping the storm!" she exclaims. "We
have to reach the cave!"
The storm is growing closer by the second. Which is the right thing to do?

If you go to the trailer, go to PAGE 97.

If you head for the cave, go to PAGE 55.

46

"What?" you cry. "How do you know?"
"The same way I knew the twister was coming," he tells you. He leads you down
the road, away from the house.
"Your aunt and uncle were carried away by the twister," he continues. "I can
smell where they are. They're still alive, but they're buried under a lot of
rubble. It's not far from here."
"Noooo!" you moan, sick with worry.
"Come on," he barks at you. "We have to hurry!"
Yoyo trots off and you follow. After a few minutes you come to a bridge over a
river. Yoyo stops.
"The bridge is weak from flooding," he muses. "I don't know if it's strong
enough to hold us."
"Is there some other way?" you ask, feeling desperate.
"There's another bridge about a mile upstream," he replies. "But if we use that
one, it will take more time to get to Aunt Emily and Uncle Jed. What do you want
to do?"

If you cross the bridge, go to PAGE 39.

If you go to the other bridge, go to PAGE 96.

47

This is no time to learn how to drive, you tell yourself. You keep running
toward the couple.
When you get close enough, you scream, "Run! Run for your lives!" Sweat trickles
down your face, stinging your eyes. But you keep running in their direction. You
point toward the approaching storm.
The man and woman turn and stare at you. At first they look startled to see you.
But then they frown and shake their heads.
Whoa. Nice reception for someone who was about to save your life, you think.
"Thanks," the woman scolds you. "You ruined our shot!"
"What? Your shot?" you repeat. You follow the woman's gaze down the hillside -
and see a camera crew!

Find out what they're shooting on PAGE 28.

48

You don't know if you can trick the twister, and you're not going to try.
You hit the thruster button on the outside of the suit. You're jerked upward by
the jet pack on your back. Using the controls Sally showed you, you steer to the
storm's edge.
Your heart beats wildly. It's working! Soon you'll be free.
"Going somewhere?" the twister snarls. With a sickening crack, your suit slams
against a wall of wind. Your head bounces against the inside of the helmet. The
jets scream, then die. They're no match for the force of a tornado.
"You cannot escape my grasp!" the twister shouts. "No one who enters the twister
ever leaves - alive!"
The wind spins even faster, tearing at your suit. The twister's blue face comes
closer to you. Its large mouth opens wide.
You feel yourself being pushed toward it. Into its sharp teeth! The huge monster
clamps its jaws down on you.
Too bad. Looks like yelling at the twister has cost you your life. If you hadn't
opened your mouth and been such a windbag, you might have survived.

THE END

49

Without hesitating you jump down into the pit.
"Don't worry, boy!" you murmur. You crouch by Yoyo's side. "I'll get you out of
here, somehow!"
"No, I'll get you out!" he answers. Then he jumps to his hind legs. An orange
glow surrounds him.
What is going on? you wonder.
"Don't be afraid!" he declares. "Your bravery and kindness have released my full
powers. You see, not only can I sense the storm, but with the aid of a true
friend I can also control it!"
You watch, openmouthed, as the dog walks on his hind legs to the center of the
pit. He lifts his head skyward. Instantly the wind swirls over you. It gently
lifts you and Yoyo out of the pit and onto the ground. Cool!
The twister moves toward the rubble that buried your aunt and uncle. The
powerful wind clears the rubble away! It lifts rocks, beams, and entire walls.
Yes! At last you see your aunt and uncle - and they're safe!
Yoyo turns to you with a broad, toothy smile.
"Not bad for a dog, huh?"

"No way!" you snap at Wendy. "I am not talking to a stupid carpet!"
"WHO ARE YOU CALLING STUPID?"
"Wha-?" You lose your grip on the rug. A mighty voice cuts through the storm. A
bright blue face appears in the air in front of you.
"I told you it was magic!" Wendy shouts with glee.
Unreal! You blink a few times. But the face is still floating there. You take a
deep breath. "Who are you?" you ask the face.
"Who do you think I am?" he answers with a sneer. "I am the genie of the carpet.
And you said I was stupid!"
All you can do is stare, dumbfounded, at the genie's huge face. Why didn't you
listen to Wendy?
"Oh, yeah," he adds in a gruff voice. "I am required to inform you that your
wish is my command."
"Great!" you cry in a weak voice. You glance at the storm raging around you.
"Genie, take us someplace safe!" you order.

Go with the genie to PAGE 10.

This is too much for you to handle alone. You have to tell Sally about it. You
switch on your microphone.
"Sally!" you cry. "You're never going to believe this but the twister is-"
"Talking to you?" the scientist interrupts. "I knew it!" she shouts. "I knew
there was an intelligence behind these storms. Now we're going to trap it!"
"Sally," you protest. You glance at the face of the fierce-looking storm. "How
can we trap a tornado?"
" Don't worry," Sally reassures you. "We have an electromagnetic field prepared
that can hold the twister. All you have to do is get it to the right spot."
You listen carefully to her plan, but you still have doubts about Sally's
scheme. Then again, she's a scientist. She must know what she's doing. Right?
You swallow and try talking to the twister again.
"Uh, hello!" you say, trying to sound calm.
"I want to talk to you," the twister snarls.

Gulp! Talk to the twister on PAGE 53.

52

You shudder. Talking animals? You can't believe it.
You realize with growing amazement that the deep voice belongs to a huge brown
bear.
"Stupid humans," it roars. "They couldn't tell the twister was coming until it
almost hit. Then they ran into their holes in the ground."
"They have lost their connection with the earth - and with the sky," twitters a
bird.
"Yes, they call us dumb animals," a squirrel chimes in. "But we always know when
a storm or earthquake is coming."
"Or a flood," whinnies a horse. "If they listened to us, we could save them a
lot of trouble."
"But we won't help them," the bear adds. "Not after the way they've treated us."
"Never!" a chorus of voices cries.
This is too completely unbelievable. You creep closer to hear some more.

Listen on PAGE 76.

53

"Yes," you reply, "so do I. But first, I want to know if you really are the
voice of this mighty tornado. Can you make the twister move?"
"Of course!" the voice answers. It sounds annoyed.
"Can you prove it?" you ask. "Could you move to the east about a half a mile?"
"You mean, into the electromagnetic field?" the voice booms. The face of blue
light flickers with rage. It bears its teeth.
"But - I-" you try to explain.
"You fool!" the voice replies. "I am the master of wind, sound, and air! And I
can hear your thoughts."
"What's wrong?" Sally's question echoes in your ear.
But you can't answer. The wind shakes your storm suit - hard. The communication
antenna snaps off.
With a sickening squeal of metal, the suit splits in half. All your protection
is gone!
"You think you can tame the wind?" the storm cries. "You will become the wind!"

A year later you're standing in a television studio in Manhattan, watching the
Good Day Show. In an hour you and your aunt and uncle are leaving for a
month-long vacation in Tahiti. Of course, they sold the farm months ago.
Yes, things have turned out pretty well. And all because you saved Yoyo's life.
Speaking of Yoyo, it's almost time for his appearance.
"And now for today's forecast," the show's host announces, "here's Yoyo, the
weather dog!"
Yoyo stands in front of the weather map and begins delivering the weather
report.
You smile as you recall how, after you saved his life, Yoyo never lost his
ability to talk or predict the weather. He explained to you that he was able to
keep the ability because of the love you showed him.
Now he's a national TV star. Making tons of money.
You just hope he never gets fired for having fleas!

55

"You're right. The best way to help that trailer guy," you tell Wendy, "is to
return the doll to the cave and stop the twister."
Wendy nods. You follow her as she sprints up a trail. Every time you turn back,
the black cone of the tornado is closer - and larger.
Soon it fills the sky. The wind howls around you, tearing at your clothes. Tree
branches snap off and fly away. You dodge left and right to avoid them.
You struggle to the top of the rise. "There it is!" Wendy shouts over the noise
of the storm.
There's a small opening in the rocks, just a few feet away. You dive into the
entrance to the cave, just as the full blast of the storm hits. The funnel
hovers just outside the cave. It seems to be trying to follow you in!
"Wendy, the doll!" you declare. "Where do we return it?"

You know the twister looks dangerous, but you can't help thinking of what it did
to your aunt and uncle.
You feel anger well up inside of you. "How can you say people don't matter?" you
yell at the storm. "You hurt two people who matter very much - to me! You have
to stop!"
"Forget it!" the storm spits out the words. "A twister goes where it wants,
blows down what it wants. And hurts anyone it wants. Nothing can stop me!
Especially not a puny human!"
The storm opens its mouth. Wide.

The animals won't give you a chance to talk, you realize. You have to show them
you can be trusted.
You throw open all the doors on the mouse cages.
Then you tip over the tanks and let dozens of frogs and lizards out into the
world.
The angry animals burst into the lab.
"This human freed us," a white lab rat squeaks.
You smile and nod in agreement. See? I'm a nice human, you think.
"You know what this means?" the horse rumbles.
"Yes," the bear growls. He bares his teeth at you. "We have more help! Kill the
human!"
Talk about ungrateful! The white lab rat and the rest of his friends turn on
you. They fling their small bodies at your feet and ankles. Ouch! You feel the
sharp stings of dozens of tiny teeth and claws. As you bend down to knock them
away, you stare face-to-face at the snarling bear. Uh-oh!
Looks like you've come to an ending that's a little more than you can bear.

"You have polluted this sacred place!" the spirit booms. As he speaks, the wind
in the cavern stirs. "How dare you? What have you to say for yourselves?"
You're too shaky to speak. Besides, you don't know anything about this sacred
place or the wind spirit. Wendy's the expert. You nudge her. "Uh-uh-uh," she
stutters.
"Answer!" the spirit demands.
But Wendy's teeth are chattering in fear. You realize it's up to you. You just
wish you knew what to say.
Hey! Maybe you should just admit that. Aunt Emily always told you, when you
didn't know something, you should ask about it.
What if you tell the spirit you don't know anything about Native American
culture - and then say you'd like to learn about it? Maybe he'd like that.
Wait, you think. That sounds kind of lame. So lame, the spirit might not believe
you. Maybe you should just say you're sorry.

Native American culture, turn to PAGE 107.

There's no way you can make a radio call without Spin hearing you. You have to
destroy their controls!
Luckily, Spin is talking to Sally - who's now inside the twister - on the
two-way radio.
You study the instruments - and notice a small screen in front of you. It shows
the path of the storm. Next to it is a screen that looks like a video game. And
there's a joystick in front of it. That must be the controller for the tornado!
You can tell at a glance that the twister is definitely headed for Tully's
Creek, the town from the videotape.
Hey! You have friends in that town! You can't let them die!
You grab the joystick. Maybe you can direct the storm away!
"What are you doing?"
Spin's harsh voice makes you jump out of your seat. He's standing over you, and
he looks like he's angry - very angry!

No, you decide at the last moment. "Wendy said she had to return the doll to a
certain place in the cave. She didn't say anything about giving it to the
tornado! She could have done that all along."
"Give me the doll!" the voice of the tornado demands.
"No!" you shout. You try to sound brave, but you're beginning to lose your
nerve. Sweat beads on your forehead. "I'm supposed to return this to the cave
spirit - not to you!"
"You dare to deny me!" the voice roars. You wince in pain as the sound vibrates
through your entire body. The force of the wind picks up. You feel it tearing at
you, turning you around. You try to shield Wendy from it, but both of you are
lifted like feathers. You bang against the cave's stone walls with a painful
jolt.
This is it! you think. It's the end!
But now you hear another voice. This one is also loud, but calmer and gentler.
"Stop!" it commands.
Whoa! Who could that be?

"You want me to go inside the suit?" you shriek.
Before Sally can answer, the van pulls up a long driveway. It stops in front of
a low gray building.
You enter the building. There's so much equipment inside - so many computers!
Everything's blipping and bleeping. Cool! For a second you forget your
nervousness.
The scientists scurry around, grabbing cables and electronic parts.
Then you see it standing against the wall. The storm suit. You walk closer and
touch the shiny chrome sides. You imagine what it would be like inside it,
floating into a deadly, raging storm.
"You don't have to," Sally says from behind you.
"I can squeeze into the suit and you can help out on the ground," she offers.
"It's up to you."
Your mind races as you consider the choices. With two scientists at the controls
and you in the suit, there might be a better chance of finding your aunt and
uncle. But you're only a kid. Maybe you should stay on the ground.

How are you going to convince Sally and Spin that you're talking to a twister?
You hardly believe it yourself.
"It's nothing," you say into your microphone. "I was just, uh, singing."
"Well, pay attention!" Sally scolds. "Your life depends on it."
"Okay!" you agree. Then you flip off the microphone. You take a deep breath.
Even though you feel like an idiot doing it, you decide to talk with the
twister.
You think about your aunt and uncle, and there's only one question on your mind.
"Why do you destroy things?" you ask. "Why do you hurt people?"
The storm grins at you, showing all its pointed, razor-sharp teeth. "People are
not very important to me."
GULP! That doesn't sound too promising.

"There it is!" Yoyo cries out. He scampers ahead and leaps onto the pile of
rubble that used to be a building.
"Dig!" he urges you. "Your relatives are under here. And they're still alive. I
sense it!"
Frantically you grab at rocks and pieces of lumber. You hurl them aside without
stopping. Your hands are scraped and raw - but you don't care. Yoyo works beside
you, scratching and clawing at the dirt.
But when you pause to take a breath, you realize - you've hardly made a dent in
the heap of wreckage.
"This will take forever!" you gasp.
"And we have another problem," the dog replies. He points his nose at the sky.
"There's another twister coming. I can feel it!"
You glance around you. Oh, no! There's no shelter in sight. If the twister hits
you here, you and Yoyo will both be killed. But you can't just run off and leave
your aunt and uncle!
What should you do?

If you stay, go to PAGE 37.

If you leave, go to PAGE 67.

You realize that Yoyo is trying to lead you to safety. You turn and run after
him.
But now the twister seems to be following you. You race after your trusty dog.
Yoyo scrambles a little way ahead to an abandoned farmhouse by the road. He
barks and jumps up and down.
You realize he wants you to go inside the house. But that building is now a
wreck. It can barely stand up. How can it shelter you from a twister?
You could keep running. But you're so tired, you don't know how much farther you
can go.

Spin runs to your side of the control panel and checks the instruments. An evil
smile spreads across his face.
"You hit the accelerator!" he gloats. "Now Tally's Creek will be destroyed even
sooner. I knew I could count on you in the end."
Whoa. Spin thinks you were trying to help him.
"We're going to keep you with us," Spin says. "That way you can help us
terrorize more towns!"
Oh, no, you think. Looks like your plan helped Tally's Creek come to a really
bad

END.

66

"Wendy!" you shout. You shake her. But it's no use. She isn't conscious. Pebbles
and dust start pouring in through the cave entrance. You choke and gag on
swirling dust.
Anger wells up inside you. That's it, you decide. You're tired of running from
the tornado. You're ending this - right now! You grab the doll from Wendy's
pocket and stand up.
"Why are you chasing us?" you scream at the wind. "We're here to return the
doll!"
Fuming, you wait for an answer. But instead, you get the twister. Big-time.
Its dark funnel roars up to the entrance of the cave! Its sound is so intense,
you have to stick your fingers in your ears. Then, as you watch dumbfounded, the
twister snakes its way into the cave!

"Come on," you urge Yoyo. "We have to get help!"
"No kidding," he growls.
The two of you run down the road. The sky grows darker every second.
"This way!" you shout when you reach a turn in the road. "I think there are some
buildings up ahead."
You wheel around. Yoyo's gone!
"Yoyo!" you shout. The wind is rising, and the trees are swaying wildly. Then
you hear a faint barking.
" I'm down here!" Yoyo calls.
You stumble in your pooch's direction, and nearly fall into a deep storm cellar.
It's all that remains of a house torn away by the twister. You lean over and see
Yoyo lying at the bottom of the cellar.
"I can't get out!" he calls up.
You look at the sky. You may not have enough time to get down there and lift
Yoyo out. But if you leave him, he'll be killed.

If you try to rescue Yoyo, go to PAGE 49.

If you go on looking for help, go to PAGE 68.

68

The twister races toward you. It's louder than a runaway freight train. There's
no time to get Yoyo out.
"I'll be back as soon as I can, Yoyo!" you shout. Without answering, he looks up
at you with sad brown eyes. You feel bad. But you turn and race for help anyway.
You have no choice, you think.
You run until your heart is ready to explode. The road is deserted. The wind is
blowing wildly. Tears of exhaustion are flowing down your cheeks. Then you see
it! A bright red truck, with lights flashing. It's a rescue team!
Panting, you run to the truck and collapse.
"My aunt and uncle-" you gasp. You point back to the pile of wreckage where you
left them. "And my dog-" You point where you left Yoyo.
A tall man in uniform steps down from the truck. "Don't worry, kid," he says.
"We'll take care of your folks."
"But my dog!" you cry.
"Sorry about your dog," he replies. "But people come first."
He grabs your arm and pulls you into the truck.

The carpet dives sharply. Aaah! You're falling to the ground!
You start talking. What have you got to lose?
"Magic carpet!" you shout. "Take us to safety!"
You grip the fringe of the rug with all your strength. Please let it work, you
pray. Please let the carpet hear me.
You feel the rug shake and shift under you. It begins to climb again. Yes! It
seems to be following your command!
But you didn't command it to flip upside down!
"Yowwww!" you howl as the rug turns over. It tumbles to the ground. And so do
you and Wendy! Talking to the rug didn't do a thing. The tornado is in charge
after all!
Screaming, the two of you hurtle to the earth. In another few seconds you'll
just be a memory.
Boy, you think. This time you sure had the rug pulled out from under you!

THE END

You want to do what's best for your aunt and uncle, but you just don't think you
can handle flying into a twister.
"I think I'd better help out on the ground," you decide.
"That's probably the best choice," Sally replies. She puts her arm on your
shoulder. "I'll squeeze into the suit and you can help Spin with the controls."
You help Spin and Sally load all their equipment into a truck. Then Spin checks
a screen in the back of the truck.
"Yes!" he shouts. "The twister is still active!" He jumps into the driver's
seat. "I saw it on the radar. It's just a few miles away! Let's chase it!"
The three of you roar off in the truck and race down a country road. Soon you
can see the black funnel of the twister not far away. It's headed right for you.
Spin stops the truck, and Sally climbs into the suit.
"Wish me luck," she says. She clamps on the helmet.

"Oatbucket can't carry us much farther," you argue. "We have to try our luck
here."
Wendy nods in agreement. The two of you slide off the horse's back. With a
whinny he gallops away.
You nod toward the old furniture store. "Maybe there's a cellar in that
building!" you guess. You burst through the front door and search, but there's
no stairway. Nothing!
A crumpling sound freezes you in your tracks. You watch in horror as the front
doors of the building peel off!
The wind reaches in for you. It knocks you flat on the floor. You grab the leg
of a heavy table to keep yourself from being sucked into the storm.
"Over here!" Wendy screams. She's sitting behind a pile of carpets. You scramble
toward her on your hands and knees.
"We are in deep trouble!" you shout as the building rattles around you. "These
old rugs won't save us!"
KA-BOOM! Every window in the place implodes! You bury your face in a rug and
wait for the end. But Wendy nudges you with her elbow.
"What?" you snap at her.

Check out what Wendy's looking at

BOOM! A blast carries you into the air. You tumble head over heels. Then, from
your waist, you hear the roar of rockets. They stabilize the suit so that you're
upright.
You know this would be cool if you didn't have a reason for being here. You peer
through the storm, searching for the one thing that matters most to you - your
family.
You can't make out anything - except black dust. You glance down at the lights
of the instrument panel inside your helmet. The digital readout tells you you're
a thousand feet in the air and traveling at one hundred fifty miles an hour!
"What do you see?" Sally's voice rings in your ears.
"Well " You stop short.
"I've been waiting for you!" a voice whispers.
Whoa! Who is that? It doesn't sound like Spin or Sally! You twist around. Where
is that voice coming from?
"Did you hear that?" you shout into your microphone.
"Hear what?" Sally replies.
"I don't know," you mutter. You shake your head. Could you have imagined the
voice?'
Your spine tingles when you hear it again. "I am the storm," it declares. "I've
been waiting for you."

"Hurry!" Wendy shouts to you.
You struggle to make it up a rocky trail. A change in the breeze makes your
heart stop. You don't have to look back to know the twister's closing in on you
- again.
You reach the top of the trail - and see a huge cave. "Yes!" you cry. Inside,
you can return the doll to its place with the wind spirit! Then you'll get Aunt
Emily and Uncle Jed back - and that tornado will finally leave you alone!
The wind gusts, nearly knocking you over. Above you, a pine tree branch breaks
off with a sickening crack. You race for the cave entrance and avoid the branch.
But Wendy's not as fast. The branch slams into the side of her head. "Ohhh!" she
groans. She collapses to the floor.
"Wendy!" you cry. But she's out cold. You drag her into the cave. Whew! She's
still breathing. But the twister is raging outside the cave. You have to get rid
of it!
You spy the Native American doll sticking out of Wendy's pocket. Should you try
to wake Wendy so she can return the doll? Or should you take the doll and do it
yourself?

If you try to wake her, go to PAGE 66.

If you return the doll yourself, go to PAGE 15.

74

Something small and sharp slams into the side of your head.
Yeow! A bird stabbed you with its beak!
Pain shoots through your right leg. You reach down and grab something small and
furry. A squirrel is biting you!
Animals of every size and shape rush at you. You jump backwards and fall
outside.
Where is Yoyo? you wonder. He could talk to these animals. He could save you!
But your dog is nowhere in sight.
The huge brown bear begins to charge at you..
No! He's coming to get you!
You bolt from the house. But you know you can't outrun all these beasts! You
have to hide!
In the distance you spot a school building. Outside it is a yellow school bus.
The bus is closer than the school. You can reach it in a few seconds. But can it
protect you from the animals?
Maybe you should head for the school instead!

If you run into the school, go to PAGE 32.

If you run into the school bus, go to PAGE 112.

"Sorry," you mutter to the boy. "I'm out of here."
You stretch your body as far over as you can. You reach your hand out and grab
the rope. Yes! You snag it!
Yeow! Your arm is nearly jerked out of its socket! The wind is tugging at you,
trying to tear you away from the rope. You fight its force to get your other
hand and your feet around the rope.
The rope is almost ten inches thick. It sways a bit in the wind, but it seems
sturdy.
WHACK! A heavy piece of wood smacks you in the arm. Yikes! You've got to move -
fast.
Time to see where this rope goes.
You gaze down at the thick, swirling tornado beneath you. But when you look up,
the sky is lighter.
Hey! The rope goes above the storm. You frown. This is totally weird. Then
again, it's totally good news for you. Maybe you can climb up and hang out there
until the twister moves on.
One foot at a time, you begin to haul yourself up the green rope. Carefully.
Because one slip could mean your death!

76

Wow! The animals can tell when a disaster is about to strike! They can predict
floods and earthquakes. You realize how many lives would be saved if the animals
told people their secret!
On the other hand, they don't seem to like humans very much. Why would they want
to share their secret?
Still, if there was a way to convince them...
Maybe you should give it a try.

If you talk to the animals, turn to PAGE 98.

If you decide not to talk to them, go to PAGE 30.

77

You think of the wind spirit. What if it's so angry, it decides to punish
whoever took the doll?
"No way!" you tell Wendy. "You took it. You return it!"
Trembling, Wendy nods and turns toward the shrine. She places the small doll in
an empty spot on the shelf.
A huge gust of wind blasts through the depths of the cave. You and Wendy step
back. Your heart starts pounding double-time.
The doll! You realize. It's beginning to move!
You stand rooted to the spot in shock. The small corn-husk doll grows larger -
until it towers over you.
And as it grows it changes. It's no longer a doll but the shimmering,
transparent figure of a person.
"The wind spirit!" you gasp. It has taken the form of a Native American warrior!
The warrior gazes down, points at you with a ghostly hand, and opens his mouth
to speak.

Listen up on PAGE 58.

You struggle against the restraints holding you in your seat. If only you could
break free....
Wait a minute... if you twist your hand this way... yes! One hand slips out from
under the strap. You undo all your buckles and reach for the door. You pull. No!
It won't open!
You glance around the capsule. There are two buttons in the wall. One is marked
STOP The other is marked PLAN B.
You have to do something, so you might as well try one of these buttons. But
will you be lucky enough to pick the right one? To find out, flip a coin.

If it comes up heads, you push STOP.

If it comes up tails, you push PLAN B.

Whoa! What is this? Your mind races. It sounds like - like a blackmail message!
Spin and Sally aren't trying to rescue your aunt and uncle! you slowly realize.
They're using their invention to control the twister - and then they're
threatening people into giving them money!
"Deliver the cash," the tape continues. "Or else."
You have to do something. You can't let Spin and Sally get away with this!
But what can you do? You could use the radio in the truck to call for help. But
what if the police don't find you in time?
Instead, maybe you should try to wreck Spin and Sally's plan on your own. After
all, the suit's controls are right in front of you. You could try to destroy
them.
Even though you're not exactly sure how the controls work.

If you call for help, turn to PAGE 42.

If you try to stop them on your own,

You have to stay in the storehouse. Going outside would be crazy!
WHAM! A gust of wind slams against the building. You glance up. A piece of the
roof flies off - then another.
The entire roof is ripped from the building! The world vanishes from view as
billowing dust erases the ground, the sky, and the storehouse walls. You grab
for something - anything - to hold on to. But it's too late. The wind scoops you
off the ground and hurtles you through the air.
This is it! you think. I'm dead meat!
"Aaaah!" You turn head over heels, screaming as you tumble through the dust
cloud. Your heart pounds hard against your rib cage. You're being carried into
the twister!
But - wait a minute. You're not crashing into anything. The wind doesn't even
hurt you. You're just - flying!

Fly over to PAGE 94.

81

The twister flies over the mountain range. And starts panting - gasping for
breath.
"What's happening to me?" it cries. Its voice sounds raspy and broken. You
notice the air is getting clearer every second.
Yes! you think. Your plan is working! The storm is dying.
"I feel weak," the twister complains. "What have you done?"
"It's the mountains!" you shout. "A twister can only survive on flat land.
You're breaking up!"
"You tricked me!" The tornado's voice grows wheezy, then faint. Its blue face
flickers. The wind begins to die down. It isn't strong enough to hold you up any
longer! As you fall, you turn on your jet pack and float gently to the ground.
Yes! The black funnel has collapsed.
Everything caught up in the wind - trees, bits of wood, and dust - starts
falling to the earth.
"How could this happen?" the twister gasps.
"Let's face it, twister," you say. "You just ran out of breath."

THE END

82

Flying twigs and gravel pelt you and Yoyo. They scrape your face and hands. The
tornado's roar fills your ears.
Have to keep going, you think. Have to make it to safety! You're about to give
up from exhaustion, when the wind dies down.
Huh? What happened? You glance around.
Yoyo has led you to a small hill a short distance from the farmhouse. The air
here is still. But you can see the twister still raging over your home!
A strange groaning sound fills your ears.
The tornado rushes at your aunt and uncle's house.
"The storm cellar!" you choke. The twister is right over it. Your aunt and uncle
are down there!
KA-BOOM! The house explodes from the force of the wind.
"Nooo!" you yell. Yoyo barks. He scrambles away. He wants you to follow him. But
- what about your aunt and uncle? Do you stay and see if they're okay? Or do you
follow your faithful dog?

If you follow Yoyo, go to PAGE 64.

If you stay, go to PAGE 44.

The wind pulls at you from different directions.
"Ohhh!" you groan in agony. You feel as if you're being ripped apart!
You begin to shriek from the pain - but the blue light from the twister's face
surrounds you.
Ahhh! The pain has vanished!
"Yes," it tells you. "You are now part of me. Together we will race over the

earth!"
You look down and see that it's true. You've become part of the tornado! With a
thrill you understand that you now have the power to move the wind itself!
With a roar of excitement you blow across the countryside. You can smash
anything in your way, and it feels great!
With a smile you realize you've reached a truly smashing...

END.

84

The truck roars off, and soon you're back at the wrecked house. You watch
helplessly as rescue teams arrive with heavy equipment. You stand to one side,
numb with exhaustion.
"We've found them!" a rescuer shouts. "They're okay!"
A state trooper comes up to you. "We'll have them out in a little while," he
declares. "How did you know they were there?"
"My dog -" you begin. But the thought of Yoyo lying alone in that pit makes you
break down in tears. You run for the storm cellar. You have to see if he's still
there. If the rescue team won't help you, you'll do it alone.
The twister is gone and the day is clear. You stumble your way over fallen trees
and through puddles. Covered in mud, legs weak, you reach the pit. With your
last bit of strength you go up to the edge and gaze down. Your heart leaps in
happiness. It's Yoyo!
He scrambles up the side of the pit. He jumps into your arms and happily licks
your face. You're smiling from ear to ear. Hey, don't be surprised. You knew all
along this story would have a happy

END.

85

"Help!" you scream. The wind spins you around in the air, first slowly, then
faster and faster. Soon you're lifted out of the cave and into the air above the
mountain.
You stop spinning as the wind floats you over the countryside. You gaze down.
Whoa! Before your eyes the damage done by the twister is being magically undone.
Trees are placed upright. Buildings are magically pieced together.
Then you're over your own farm. You watch as everything returns to the way it
was before the twister hit.
Wendy said the wind spirit would restore everything to normal once the doll was
returned. Now she's keeping her promise! you realize.
You're lowered to the ground in front of your aunt and uncle's farmhouse. And
the two of them are there! Sitting on the front porch! They're alive! You run to
them.
"Where have you been?" your uncle asks. "I was getting worried."
Your aunt and uncle probably don't remember anything about the twister, you
realize. Better not to remind them.
"I was just hanging out with some friends," you answer. "And we were, uh -
totally into this game called Twister!"

THE END

86

You'd never be able to force Spin off the truck. You decide to try to mess with
the controls!
You spot a piece of metal pipe lying on the truck's floor. Hey. That gives you
an idea. You pick up the pipe and dart over to the control panels.
You swing the pipe down - ZZZZZT! Sparks fly everywhere.
The intercom sputters. "My suit - losing power!" Sally shouts. Her voice sounds
panicky. "Get me back!"
"No! You wrecked our plan!" Spin wails at you.
He opens the truck's back door and gasps. You glance outside. Oh, no! The
twister is coming right at you!
Spin shoves you out of the truck. "Since you made us lose control of the storm,
you can face the consequences!"
He unties Sally's tether from the truck. The rope snaps away. It flies off into
the heart of the storm.
"See you around, Sally," Spin mutters. You can't believe it! Spin just left his
own partner inside the tornado!
He lunges into the driver's seat. The truck's engine roars and Spin pulls away -
leaving you to face the storm - alone!

What a nut! you think. The storm is not going to take a time-out just because
this kid said -
You stop, midthought. The storm is slowing down! It's almost as if it did listen
to the boy. This is too weird! The wind sets you down gently on the grass below.
Standing next to you are Wendy and the strange boy. Plus your aunt Emily and
your uncle Jed!
"Why? How?" You stumble over the questions running through your head. Why are
they here? How are they alive?
"Ahem." Someone behind you clears his throat.
You turn and see an old man standing behind you. He's wearing a lab coat. His
long white hair stands straight up from his head.
"I think I can clear up your confusion," he says.
Oh, really? you think. This should be a good one.

Hear what he has to say on PAGE 128.

88

You hold a press conference in your aunt and uncle's yard. "Ladies and
gentlemen!" you announce. "I have amazing news!" A buzz of excitement goes
through the crowd.
"The animals! They can talk," you tell the group. You smile. This is it - the
moment when you become famous. You hope the photographers snap good shots of
you.
One reporter smirks. "What? This kid's crazy!"
"Is this some kind of joke?" another reporter yells.
The crowd starts to leave in a hurry. Your aunt and uncle rush up to you.
"Wait-" you yell. "It's true! I can prove it." But no one listens. Your dreams
of fame are deflated.
"Poor dear," your aunt says. She looks concerned. "We didn't realize the stress
your little adventure caused. Don't worry. We're sending you to a hospital for a
rest."
You try to explain, to protest. "But I'm not crazy! I really can talk to the
animals!" you shout.
Too bad. Looks like you're going away for a long time. And the only person
you'll have to talk to there is yourself.

THE END

89

There's no way you can reach them in time unless you start driving! You race to
the van and climb into the driver's seat. Luckily, the key is in the starter!
You turn it and the engine roars to life!
Yes! you think. Driving is going to be a snap! Even if your feet barely reach
the pedals.
Hmmm. Which pedal is the brake? You stomp on one of them. VRRROOOM! You take off
into the field.
Yeeow! The brake must be the other one! you think.
You ease off the gas a little and gain control of the steering. You point the
car toward the couple. All right! You're going to do it. You're going to rescue
the couple and get away alive!
But then the couple notices you. They start waving and shouting something. But
what are they saying? Either they want you to stop - or to step on it. Oh, no.
Which is it?

If you step on the brake, turn to PAGE 25.

If you speed up, turn to PAGE 102.

The twirling cone shoots into the cave. You brace yourself, ready to be slammed
into the wall.
But the wind doesn't hurt you - it surrounds you! You and Wendy are inside the
twister. How can this be?
"I am the storm!" a deep voice booms out of nowhere. Your eardrums throb with
pain from the sound. "I am summoned by the wind spirit in this cave."
"Why are you chasing us?" you demand. "We only want to return the doll to the
wind spirit."
"Give me the doll and I will return it," the voice thunders. "Then I will stop
following you!"
"You?" you ask, puzzled.
"Yes!" the voice booms. "Throw it into my whirlwind!"
All right! If you throw the doll into the storm, this whole nightmare will end!
But - wait. Didn't Wendy say the doll had to be returned to the place she stole
it from? She didn't say anything about giving it to the storm. What should you
do?

If you give the doll to the twister, go to PAGE 121.

If you hold on to it, turn to PAGE 60.

You grab the rope.
"We have to wait it out!" you order Wendy. The two of you stop at a large
boulder and sit down with your backs against it. Then you pass the rope around
the boulder and your waists, tying it tightly.
"We'll be okay now!" you shout. You cross your fingers, hoping you're right.
The wind continues to gust, but you and Wendy are fine.
It's working, you think.
The shrieking of the tornado grows even louder. Next to you, the walls of the
cave begin to shake. Bits of stone crumble off the roof and start to fall around
you.
"The twister is breaking up the mountain!" Wendy cries. "We'll be buried alive!"
No! You can't stay here! Frantically you tug at the rope, trying to get free.
But the knot is stuck!
Too bad, looks like some rocks are going to roll all over you!

For the first time you get a good look at the people you've saved. The man is
dressed in a plaid flannel shirt and blue jeans. He wears wire-rimmed glasses
and has a pleasant, round face.
The woman has long, dark hair pulled back in a tight braid. She's wearing a blue
workshirt, jeans, and heavy boots.
"I'm Spin Houston, and this is Sally Turner," the man says: "Thanks again for
rescuing us."
"What were you doing out there?" you wonder.
"We're scientists," Sally tells you. "We study tornadoes so we can predict them
and save lives."
Too bad they couldn't save your aunt and uncle, you think. You're so sad that
you blurt out the story of how your family and farm were destroyed.
When you're done, Spin stares at Sally. Slowly she nods.
"Listen, there's a chance that your aunt and uncle are still alive!" she tells
you.
Your mind reels. Whoa! You have to hear more!

Turn to PAGE 8.

93

You're alive! You crawl out of the suit and take a deep breath of clean air.
You did it. You lived through the storm! And you stopped the crazy scientists
from destroying a town.
You glance around. Hey, where are you, anyway? The twister seems to have left
you at the base of a mountain.
Weird, you think. There's smoke coming from the mountaintop. It almost looks
like a -
KA-BOOM!

What was that? Find out on PAGE 27.

94

Hey! You're just like Superman. And you're not the only one pretending to be an
action hero - Wendy whizzes by you, waving.
"Want to play too?" she calls. Then she flies away.
Play? What's she talking about? you wonder. But you don't have much time to
think about it. Something is coming your way. It's long and green and hangs
straight up and down. Is it a ladder? Or a rope? Maybe - if you stretch - you
can grab it as you fly by.
"Hey!" A voice shouts at you. Your heart jumps. You turn your head and see a boy
flying next to you!
"Do you want to play or what?" the boy asks.
Wait. Where did he come from? you think. And what does he mean, play?
You want to ask, but you're approaching the rope fast. You've got only a split
second to choose.

If you grab the rope, go to PAGE 75.

If you ask the boy what he means, go to PAGE 31.

You push the button marked STOP.
You hear a computer voice from a speaker in the wall. "Self-destruct program
selected. Countdown beginning now"
"Self-destruct...?" you whisper. Your stomach flops when you realize your
mistake. The STOP button stops the rocket by destroying it! And you're trapped
inside!
You're a goner.
"Help!" you scream.
"Ten seconds until detonation," the voice says. "Nine, eight, seven..."
Oh, well. At least you're ending this adventure with a real BANG.

You won't be able to save your aunt and uncle if the bridge breaks and you drown
in the river.
"Come on!" you shout to Yoyo. "Let's find the next bridge."
You run hard, with Yoyo scampering at your side. The riverbank is wet and muddy.
You slip and slide in the muck. It's slow going. But finally you see the other
bridge, not far in the distance.
"Okay, let's cross," you tell Yoyo. You hit the bridge. In the middle of the
bridge's span, Yoyo stops in his tracks. "What's wrong, boy?" you ask.
But he doesn't answer. You follow his gaze upstream and see a solid wall of
water, thirty feet high, rushing down the river at you. A flash flood!
You want to run off the bridge to safety, but your feet are frozen in place. The
huge wave looms higher above you.
The water hits you. A cold shock paralyzes your body. The bridge gives way with
a sickening crack.
There's no escape. You and Yoyo are going to drown!

"We have to help that man!" you shout. You run for the trailer. Wendy follows at
your heels.
The man stands on the trailer doorstep, dressed in jeans and a T-shirt. Weird.
He seems totally calm.
"There you are!" he exclaims. "Where's the pizza?"
"Pizza?" you repeat. "What pizza?"
"Aren't you delivering pizzas?" He looks disappointed. "We ordered one about an
hour ago."
"No!" you shout. "There's a huge twister coming...."
But the man goes inside the trailer. You and Wendy follow. You have to make him
understand he's in danger!
Inside, a woman in a red print dress is sitting on a couch watching television
with two kids.
"Is that the pizza, Sam?" she asks.
"No, Ethel," Sam replies. "Just a couple of kids."
The wind starts to howl. The trailer shakes and shudders. You're scared. But the
family keeps watching TV
You turn to Wendy. "Explain it! Make them understand!"
"Too late," Wendy groans. Her face has turned pale. "Look out the window. This
trailer is... it's flying!"

You've got to convince the animals to reveal their secret. The safety of
humankind may depend on it!
"Uh, excuse me," you mumble.
All the animals turn and stare at you. A cold sweat breaks out on your forehead.
"I couldn't help overhearing you," you stammer.
You pause to take a breath. There's silence in the room, except for the sound of
the wind outside.
"So you all can t-t-talk!" you stammer. "Pretty cool. So anyway, I was thinking,
about this storm-warning thing. If you guys would consider letting us humans
know..."
Your voice trails off. The animals haven't made a peep or moved a muscle. Maybe
they're thinking it over.
"A human," the dog growls. "A human heard us!"
"Kill it!" the bear roars.
Whoops! Maybe not.

Go inside a tornado? The whole idea sounds crazy.
"Uh, thanks, but no thanks," you tell them.
Spin smiles wickedly. "Sorry, we don't take no for an answer." He grabs your
arms and twists them behind your back.
"Hey!" you cry. Before you can move, the two of them tie your arms and legs and
throw you into the back of the van.
After a while the van screeches to a halt. The back doors open. Spin hoists you
up onto his shoulder and carries you into a low gray building.
"Let me go!" you shout.
"Oh, we'll let you go," Sally replies. "In that!" She points out a nearby
window. You gasp. Outside is a tall, narrow rocket. It's aimed at the sky.
Sally smiles. "Like it or not, that is how we're sending you into the tornado!"

"I found it yesterday in a cave," she explains. "It's a doll of an old Native
American wind spirit. I was on a tour with my school. The tour guide told us the
old legend. He said the tribe believed that the spirit of the wind is kept in
the cave by the doll. But if the doll is removed from its place in the cave, the
spirit sends a twister to get it back." She sighs. "I know it was stupid, but I
couldn't help myself. The doll was so pretty, I felt like I just had to take
it."
You take a deep breath. This story is incredible.
"I'm still not sure I believe you," you tell Wendy. "But if you're telling the
truth, why don't you just throw the doll away?"
"Because then the wind spirit will be even angrier," Wendy explains. "And the
twister will never stop. But if I can get the doll back to its place in the
cave, the tornado will disappear. And the damage it's caused will be undone."

Yoyo will have to take care of himself. You run for the storm cellar with all
your might. You leap inside. Your uncle bolts the door right behind you.
The roaring of the storm grows louder and louder. The storm cellar door shakes
and rattles.
You're sure the wind will break through and lift the three of you up into the
sky. But the solid door holds firm. Soon the noise dies down.
Nervously your uncle takes a peek outside.
The sky is bright blue and birds are chirping. You and your aunt and uncle step
out into a sunny day.
And there's Yoyo, running and barking as though nothing had happened. The storm
has passed without causing any damage at all!
"Well, that was quite an adventure," your aunt Emily says as she walks back to
the house.
"Yep," nods your uncle Jed. "A real adventure!"
An adventure? This? You've got to be kidding!
You got through that tornado too easily. That's why you have to...

Start the adventure again on PAGE 1.

They must see the twister, you decide. They want me to hurry!
You press the gas pedal to the floor. The van leaps forward, bouncing over the
field. You're almost up to them, so you press the brake.
Oh, no. The van isn't stopping! It's skidding - right toward the man and the
woman!
You try to motion for them to get out of the way. But they don't understand!
You're going to hit them!

Brace yourself for impact on PAGE 131.

"These trailer people are too weird!" you tell Wendy. "We've got to save
ourselves!"
You glance around the trailer. There must be something that will get you out of
this mess. But what? You spot a door leading to another room.
"In here!" you call to Wendy.
You open the door and step into a small storage room. It's piled with boxes,
tools, and spare parts.
"Cool!" you cry. "We can use some of this stuff!"
"For what?" Wendy snorts. "To stop a tornado?"
Before you can answer, you shudder. Your eardrums are assaulted by the sound of
tearing metal.
CREEEAACK!
Your eyes go wide. The entire trailer is splitting in two! The half with Sam and
Ethel and the kids is carried away by the twister. It goes soaring up into the
sky. But the half you and Wendy are in plunges toward the ground!
"Yowwwwwww!" you scream.

Fall to PAGE 34.

"Don't bring me in!" Sally cries again. "I'll lose them!"
But it's too late. You've already pressed the button. The cable cranks Sally out
of the storm.
"No!" you shout. You try to reverse the control. But how? You press a million
buttons. Nothing works.
"You fool!" Sally shouts over the intercom. "That tape was just a joke! We'll
never find your aunt and uncle now!"
Nooo! you think. You just ruined your only chance to save your family!
What were you thinking? Using a twister to blackmail a town? Looks like you
really blew it this time.

THE END

105

"Yeeow!" you scream. You and Wendy are blown clear out of the cave and hundreds
of feet into the air. You tumble head over heels, until you can't tell the sky
from the ground.
"Some reward," you yell to Wendy. "We're going to be killed!"
"Maybe the spirit was still really angry!" she wails.
"No kidding," you snap back at her.
You shoot across the sky, held up by a powerful column of air. Then your heart
leaps. For the first time since you entered the cave, you feel a glimmer of
hope.
"Look!" you shout, pointing to the farmland below. "I think I know what's
happening!"

Find out what it is on PAGE 41.

106

That house will never protect you. You've got to keep running - the twister is
getting closer every second. But you have to rest for just one minute.
CRACK! The huge tree you're under breaks in two. The thick trunk collapses,
pinning you to the ground. You can't move! And the tornado is almost upon you!
Another few seconds and you'll be a goner.
Too bad. If you had listened to your dog, maybe you wouldn't be in such a
doggone mess right now.

THE END

107

"We just didn't know enough about your culture," you admit. "But we'd sure like
to learn."
The anger on the spirit's face slowly melts.
"Really?" he asks. "Very well then."
All right! The spirit believes you! A gust of wind sweeps you and Wendy off your
feet. The cavern vanishes in a blur.
THUMP! You and Wendy are plunked down in a meadow at the edge of a forest. Nice,
you think. Until you notice what Wendy is wearing. She's dressed in a beaded
leather outfit. You glance down. You're dressed that way too! The wind spirit
hovers in the air next to you.
"Down that hill is a village," he informs you. "Go and live with the people
there. Learn our culture from them. I have brought you to the past, before
Europeans came to our land. Have a wonderful life here."
"The past! But-" you start to argue.
"You said you wished to learn," the spirit tells you. He vanishes.
Learning about the wind spirit's tribe will be a lot of work, but, hey, you've
got about five centuries to do it in!

You're about to panic, when you realize - you've stumbled into the school
biology lab. Along one wall mice, rats, frogs, and lots of other small animals
fill cages and tanks.
The rough growl of the bear echoes through the hallway. The animals are chasing
you! They must have gotten inside!
They'll do anything to make sure you don't escape with their secret.
But seeing these caged animals has given you an idea.
What if you free the lab animals? Surely then the creatures chasing you will
recognize what a nice, kind human you are.
Then you have another thought. What if you explain how useful humans can be to
animals? You can offer to bring the dog all the doggie treats it can eat - or
you could build birdhouses for the birds. That might work - if they listen to
you.
You hear the hoofbeats of the horse - he's heading down the hallway. Decide now.
What do you do?

If you free the caged animals, go to PAGE 57.

If you try to reason with the animals,

You don't know who that man and woman are, but you can't let them walk into the
storm. You have to save them!
You race toward them as fast as you can. Your heart pounds and your breath comes
in gasps.
But they're farther away than you realized. You're still too far to shout to
them!
You continue on - and notice an abandoned van in the field. Hey! You could try
to drive to the couple and take them far away before the twister hits!
There's only one problem - you don't know how to drive! You could crash and
really hurt someone.
Should you get in the van and go for it?

If you keep running, go to PAGE 47.

If you get in the van, go to PAGE 89.

A giant fan begins blowing on you. "Look frightened!" Sealburg instructs.
You form your mouth into a little "0" of fear.
"Not enough!" Sealburg shouts. "Turn up the machine!"
The wind grows stronger. Hey, wait a minute! The wind is actually pushing you
toward the pit full of sharp metal!
"Good!" the director cries. "Now turn the wind machine up all the way!"
"Whoooa!" you cry. The wind shoves you back - hard. You grab for a nearby tree
and hang on Your feet are inches away from the pit full of jagged metal!
"Help!" you shout.
"Great!" Sealburg claps his hands. "Incredible!"
He thinks you're still acting. But you're not! And your fingers are losing their
grip. Another few seconds and you'll be blown onto the metal blades.
"Yes!" Sealburg shouts. "This performance will win me my Oscar!"
Great, you think. Maybe I'll win an Oscar too. For Best Scream Play!

"Wow!" you whisper. The carpet you and Wendy are sitting on is levitating in the
air.
You force yourself to peek over the fringed edge of the rug. Yikes! The storm
sucks you outside. It lifts you way up. You're hundreds of feet in the air.
Your heart clangs against your rib cage. You grip the edges of the carpet
tightly. This is totally terrifying!
"It's magic!" Wendy cries with glee. "A magic carpet!"
You scowl at her. What does she think this is, a movie?
"All we have to do is tell the carpet where to go and it will take us there,"
Wendy insists.
Wow. This girl has totally lost it. First she thinks the "wind spirit" is after
her. Now she wants you to talk to a carpet!
But, hey - the twister did seem to be following her. Maybe she's right about the
wind spirit. Maybe it will keep sending the twister after you until Wendy
returns the doll to the cave.
Maybe talking to the carpet isn't such a crazy idea.

If you talk to the carpet, go to PAGE 69.

If you try to figure another way out, go to PAGE 50.

You decide to go for the bus. With a final lunge you dive through its open door
and slam it shut behind you.
WHAM! The bus rocks. You glance up. Oh, no! The horse is kicking at the door
with its hind legs!
The bear climbs onto the hood of the bus. It roars at you through the
windshield. Its sharp yellow teeth are inches from your face. It swipes at you
with its black claws.
The horse delivers another blow to the door. One more shot like that and all the
animals will be inside!
You cower in the corner of the bus.
One thing is for certain, you realize. When these animals said they didn't want
humans to know their secret, they weren't just horsing around!

We can't give up! We have to get to the back of the cave. It'll be safer there,
you reason.
You grab Wendy's arm, and the two of you push farther down the tunnel. Soon the
force of the wind dies away.
"We made it!" you gasp. You pant for breath.
"Not yet!" Wendy replies. "We have to find the shrine - the place where I found
the doll." She glances to the right. "There it is!"
Along one wall of the cavern is a stone shelf. It's lined with bits of old clay
pottery, arrows, feathers, and other tribal relics. Wendy walks to the shrine,
with the small doll in her hand.
"I can't." She turns to you, shaking. "You do it."
You start to take the doll from Wendy and stop short.
Wait a minute, you think. Wendy stole this doll from a wind spirit. What if the
spirit is angry? If you return the doll, maybe the wind spirit will think you
stole it. You don't want to get involved with that, do you?
Then again, maybe it will be better if you just return the doll and get this
over with.

If you take the doll and return it, turn to PAGE 21.

If you don't return the doll, turn to PAGE 77.

Spin's truck is already a small dot on the horizon. And the giant tornado is
roaring at you!
Out of the corner of your eye you spot a pile of metal in the grass. Is that
what you think it is? You check it out. Yes! It's another storm suit!
Quickly you climb inside and fasten the helmet closed. You're not tied to a
cable like Sally was, but maybe the suit will still save your life.
The twister blasts you with its full force. It throws you backwards, and knocks
you to the ground. Then it sends you tumbling along the ground like a leaf.
"Owww!" you howl. Your body hurts from slamming into the metal suit, but you're
still in one piece.
The world goes black. You can't see anything! You must be in the middle of the
funnel! You feel yourself hurtling through the air. Luckily, the suit does its
job.
Soon you bump lightly to the ground. The air begins to clear. You look around
and see the twister moving away.
Yes! You made it!

"WHAT?" you cry. "The whole trailer is flying?"
You glance outside. It's true! You're staring down at the tops of trees!
With a lurch the whole trailer falls, then climbs again. Chairs and tables slide
from one wall to the next. "Oof!" you gasp. A stool rams your stomach.
The trailer is pitching and diving. At any moment it could crash to the ground!
You've got to get Wendy and the trailer family out of this -somehow.
What's wrong with these people? you think. They're still sitting on their sofa,
watching TV!
The only way you'd be calm in a situation like this is... Hey! That's it! Maybe
Sam and Ethel know a way out!

If you think Sam and Ethel know something you don't, talk to them on PAGE 13.

"Sally!" Spin yells into the radio. "It's time! Are you ready to control the
storm?"
Sally's voice comes back over the wire. You can barely make it out over the
sound of the howling wind.
"It's harder than I thought to control this thing," she shouts. "The suit's
storm capture device is working well, but I need you to boost my steering
power."
"Fine!" Spin shouts. He sprints to the far side of the control panel. He flips
switches and turns dials. "Just destroy that town!"
You see the round, swirling shape of the storm moving across the radar screen.
As Sally gains control of it, it slowly changes direction.
You know where it's headed - Tully's Creek. Soon the whole town, including your
friends, will be wiped out! Unless you do something about it.
But how?

Turn to PAGE 12.

You know your suit can't go fast enough to escape the twister. You have to trick
it somehow. You just hope this works.
"I know you want to kill me," you tell the storm. "But please, please - whatever
you do, don't take me to the mountains! Destroy me here!" It's easy to sound
scared, since you are. Very.
The twister grins wickedly. "I think I will destroy you over the mountains. I am
the storm! I can do whatever I want!"
You feel the black funnel moving, carrying you across the plains. Through
swirling dust you make out a small mountain range a few miles away.
"Ha!" the tornado laughs. "See how fast I can go! We will be at the mountains in
a flash!"
Good! That's what you're counting on.

Head for the hills on PAGE 81.

118

Slowly the bucking and roaring of the wind dies down. The sky outside the
windows clears -you're out of the storm!
Ethel rises from her seat. "The captain has now turned off the 'fasten seat
belt' sign," she announces. "Please feel free to move about the trailer."
Whew! You escaped the storm - again! You can't believe your luck!
"Where do you two want to go?" Sam calls. Wendy directs him toward a range of
low hills. The trailer dips its nose and lands in a small field. Wendy drags you
to the door.
Sam scratches his head. "Problem with a flying trailer is you can't get cable
TV," he observes. "Oh, well."
You shrug and follow Wendy outside. "We're safe!" you exclaim.
Wendy stares over her shoulder. "Wrong," she moans. You look in the same
direction. Just as Wendy said, the tornado, though far away, seems as if it's
still after you!
"To the cave!" Wendy screams. She holds up the doll that she showed you earlier.
"We're not far now! Run!"

Follow her to PAGE 73.

119

Maybe you can get the animals to listen. And you think you know how to do that
now. You run to the principal's office and go to the public address system. With
a shaking hand, you turn it on. Your life depends on this moment.
"Attention!" you roar. You hear your voice echo from every loudspeaker in the
school. "Animals! Listen to me! If you kill me, what do you get? Nothing! But
let me live and I'll help you live better lives!" That's when something else
occurs to you. "In fact," you continue, "I can make you famous! You'll get TV
shows and movie deals. You'll be big!"
"Really?" The horse trots into the principal's office.
"I guarantee it," you reply. "All you have to do is talk."
After a quick discussion the animals decide to follow you back to your farm.
This is great! you think. Not only will the animals be famous, you will too!

You turn to Wendy, who is gliding beside you. "I told you!" you brag. "All we
had to do is say we made a mistake!"
"Yeah... well," she mumbles under her breath.
"Yup, as long we get home we..." Your words catch in your throat. The wind
carrying you is dying away! You're beginning to drop.
"What's going on?" Wendy shouts. The two of you plummet downward.
"Wind spirit!" you cry. "Help!"
As if by command, the wind spirit shows up next to you.
"What's wrong?" he asks.
"What's wrong?" you scream. "We're starting to fall. We're going to be killed!"
"Sorry," the wind spirit says with a fiendish grin. "I must have turned off the
wind. Oops. Looks like, just like you, I made a mistake."

121

"Here!" you shout. You throw the doll into the storm. You watch as the wind
tears it to bits. Huh? you think. Why is the whirlwind doing that?
Wendy blinks and opens her eyes. Just in time to see the doll shredded. "No!
What did you do?" she yells.
A feeling of dread spreads over you. "I-I gave the doll back to the wind
spirit," you stammer.
"You jerk!" Wendy cries. She struggles to get up. "The twister isn't the wind
spirit, it's controlled by the wind spirit. Its only purpose was to get us back
here. Now, with the doll destroyed, the twister can do whatever it wants!"
"What?" you cry. But your words are drowned out by the laughing voice of the
tornado.
"I am free!" the storm thunders. "Finally! Free to do as I wish! And now I wish
to destroy the two of you!"
The wind in the small cave howls louder. You feel the whirlwind's unbelievable
power. In just a few moments it will crush your body against the rock walls.
Too bad. And you thought getting out of here was going to be a breeze!

Spin and Sally force you into the rocket. They strap you into a seat in the nose
cone.
"Why?" you ask. "Why are you doing this to me?"
"Our research was ended by the government," Sally explains. "They thought it was
too dangerous." She rolls her eyes. "For months, we had no test subjects. But
when you tried to save us from the twister, we knew you were a perfect human
subject - someone brave enough in the face of the storm to try out our theory."
No! These guys aren't just crazy, you realize. They're criminals.
"We weren't lying," Spin explains. "We do think someone can survive inside the
twister. We just need you to prove it!"
"I don't want to!" you scream. "Let me go!"
Spin doesn't listen. He shuts the heavy steel door. It bolts closed with a
sickening CLANK!

Prepare for takeoff on PAGE 78.

You think of your missing aunt and uncle. Not knowing where they are makes you
so sad. But if Wendy's story is true - if returning the doll will cause all the
tornado's damage to be undone, then this is your chance to make sure they're
safe!
A howl of wind interrupts your thoughts.
"Your story may be bogus," you tell Wendy. You glance nervously at the sky. "But
one thing is for sure - that twister really is coming at us. Let's get out of
here!"

You, a movie star? This guy's got to be nuts!
"I don't know anything about acting," you admit.
"Too bad." Sealburg shrugs. "You could have been big. Well, Jed and Em, I guess
it's just you."
"Jed and Em?" you repeat, confused.
"Yup," your uncle confirms. "Mr. Sealburg wants to make us movie stars too.
We're leaving for Hollywood right now."
"On his private jet," your aunt Emily chimes in. She gives you a peck on the
cheek and follows your uncle into a black limousine.
"Now, don't forget to milk the cows and feed the chickens," she reminds you.
"Cows? Chickens?" you repeat.
You realize you've lost your big chance to be rich and famous. Not only that,
you have to take care of the farm all by yourself. As the limo pulls off in a
cloud of dust, you start to run after it.
"Hey!" you shout. "What about me?"
Your uncle pokes his head out the window. "Don't worry. If you're ever in
Hollywood, we'll do lunch!"

You stretch your legs as far as they go. The tip of your big toe just reaches
the intercom switch. It clicks on. You take a deep breath and start to talk as
loudly as you can.
"One hundred million dollars!" you cry. "I can't believe it! And all for you?
How are you going to keep Sally from getting her share?"
"What?" Spin asks. "I never..."
In a piercing voice you interrupt him. "I've got to hand it to you, Spin. She'll
never know you're going to cut her loose in the twister until it's too late."
You cross your fingers, hoping Sally can hear every word you're saying.
Spin glances down at the control panel - and notices that you've turned on the
intercom. "Why, you little sneak!" he growls.
"Spin, you double-Grosser!" Sally's voice is loud and angry. "I heard
everything! You won't get away with this!"
Spin leans toward the intercom. "Sally! No! Wait!" he pleads.

Turn to PAGE 29.

"Okay," Wendy agrees, "you're right. Let's get out of here!"
But as you turn toward the cave entrance, the softer voice returns.
"You dare turn your backs on the spirit of the wind?"
A ghostlike creature dressed in traditional Native American garb looms in front
of you. It fills the cave from floor to ceiling.
Wendy gulps. "That's the wind spirit, all right."
"We returned the doll!" you yelp. "Here!" You hold it toward the spirit.
The wind spirit shakes its head. "It's not enough. You forgot to say you're
sorry!"
The tornado blows hard again, this time pushing you and Wendy deeper into the
cave. You're shoved into a giant cavern. You glance down and realize - there's
no floor here! You're going to fall to your deaths!
What a downer! You've come to

"Congratulations!" a voice shouts.
You glance around and see Spin on a monitor next to you.
"You pressed PLAN B! That activates another one of our illegal experiments!" he
tells you.
Your heart sinks. What have you done? "What do you mean?" you ask.
"Our other experiment, where we send someone into space and see if they can
survive a trip to Pluto and back," he explains.
"PLUTO?" you shriek. "That's the farthest planet from Earth!"
"That's right," Spin says. "So just sit back and relax. In this craft the trip
should only take about twenty years."
Your stomach clenches. "Twenty years?" you croak.
"Don't worry," Spin assures you. "There's plenty of food on board. I hope you
like peanut butter."
As you zoom toward the outer reaches of the solar system, you can't help but
think, peanut butter's not so bad. It goes with the huge jam I'm in!

"My name is Dr. Neederlander, and this is my niece, Wendy, and my nephew,
Peter," the white-haired old man tells you. "We were just playing a little game
that I invented called 'Twister Tag.' "
"Twister Tag?" you echo.
"It's a lot like hide-and-seek," Neederlander explains. "I was 'it' so I played
the twister. It was my job to get Wendy and Peter and suck them into the storm.
It's really scary when you're playing, but totally harmless."
"Wait. How could you be the twister?" you ask. Then you see it - a huge jet pack
strapped on to Neederlander's back.
"That's right." He chuckles, noticing your expression. "I do it with this. One
of my inventions, the Twister Pack." He points to his back. "Unfortunately our
game got a little out of hand. Your aunt and uncle got swept up in it."
He frowns. "I'm really sorry I wrecked your house. But I am a famous inventor. I
told your aunt and uncle I'd pay for a new house. If they agree to play the game
with us."
You shake your head. This is too much to take in.
"So, what do you think?" Neederlander asks. "Would you like to play too?"

Answer him on PAGE 11.

129

Wendy is right. You have to leave the storehouse. "Okay," you tell her. "I'll
go."
A loud neigh sounds from the other side of the storehouse. Wait a minute! This
is where your uncle keeps his favorite horse, old Oatbucket! That gives you an
idea.
"Come on!" You grab Wendy's hand and pull her to Oatbucket's stall. The
frightened horse shakes his brown head at you. His large eyes are wide with
fright.
"Easy, boy" You try to sound soothing. You slip a bridle on him and boost Wendy
onto his broad back. You know you'll have a much better chance of outrunning the
storm on Oatbucket! You unlock the outside door, and the wind yanks it off its
hinges! The heavy door rises up into the sky.
Oatbucket neighs loudly and stamps his feet. You know he's scared. But then, so
are you!
You swing yourself onto the horse in front of Wendy.
"Come on, boy!" you cry. "Hee-yaa!"
Oatbucket bolts out of the stall, straight into the whirling, blinding dust.

Giddyap to PAGE 38.

130

The two of you climb on Oatbucket. "Git!" you shout. But the horse is so worn
out, he can only manage a trot.
You squint off into the distance. Hey! There's a town up ahead! If you can get
there before the twister, you might find shelter.
Oatbucket plods ahead so slowly, you almost think you can run faster. "Move,"
you urge him, but the tornado gains on you.
Finally you reach the town. You gaze around, and your heart sinks. It's in
ruins. The only building still standing is an old furniture store.
The sky grows dark. In the distance you hear a booming sound. The twister is
coming for you!
Your skin prickles with fear. "The storm's coming too fast! We've got to find
shelter!" you yell to Wendy over the roar of the approaching storm.
Wendy stares at you, wide-eyed. "No! We have to keep going," she insists. "We
have to return the doll."

If you find shelter in town, go to PAGE 71.

If you keep going, turn to PAGE 45.

"Aaaaaah!" you scream.
The tires on the van squeal. The couple jumps back - as the van stops right in
front of them.
Whew! The man opens the driver's side door. The woman jumps into the passenger's
side. You hop into the back.
I am never, ever driving again till I get a license! you promise yourself.
The man stomps on the gas pedal and jerks the wheel over. The van spins around
and zooms away from the oncoming twister. You bounce onto a dirt road and start
putting miles between you and the deadly storm. Finally he pulls over to the
side of the road. You still see the tornado in the rearview mirror, but it's not
headed toward you.
The man claps you on the back. "You did it!" he shouts with joy. "You saved our
lives!"

Turn to PAGE 92.

132

Great, now you've made the tornado angry. And it looks like it wants to rip you
to shreds.
Panic grows inside you. You have to get out of this! You could use the jets on
the suit to try to fly away, but can the suit outrace a storm? You don't know.
Maybe you should try to trick the storm into letting you go instead. But how?
"Now I'm in the mood to smash things!" the storm exclaims. Its glowing eyes
widen. "Perhaps I'll start with you!"
You have to think of something. Fast!

If you try to trick the storm, go to PAGE 117.

If you try to fly away, go to PAGE 48.

You tread water like mad. You have to keep your head afloat! Yoyo dog-paddles
next to you, trying to do the same.
"I thought you animals could predict natural disasters!" you cry to your dog.
"What happened?"
"Some things I'm better at than others." Yoyo shrugs. "Now, forest fires, I get
right every time. But when it comes to floods, I'm a big washout!"
